SandBox

Mom and Philip have this tupperware sandbox they keep on the porch that Donovan has really enjoyed playing with our past couple visits. So I figured I'd try to make us something similar for here at home. It seemed an easy and inexpensive thing to put together, and I'm happy to give him things that encourage outdoor play. I bought a plastic tupperware bin from Target, then went to Home Depot where I discovered the smallest bag of sand that I could buy was 50 pounds. Oh well, D got kicked out of his stroller and replaced by a bag of sand, if only temporarily.
We had another, larger, flat tupperware box that I'd bought for something else but wasn't using, so I put the sandbox in that to help contain the mess somewhat. Donovan still feels the need to spread his sand far and wide (he uses his little shovel to dust little piles of sand on his toys, in Zach's herb garden box, etc), but it does seem to help somewhat.

So far the sandbox has been a hit. The only problem is that Nev really likes it, too. At first she was content to just look at it and maybe paw it every once in a while. Then she started getting more excited and, well, I strongly suspect she wants to do more than just paw at the sand. So now anytime we want to bring out the sandbox, I have to keep Nev inside where she whines and howls about how unfair life is.
The playground we visit most often has a HUGE sandplay area, but Donovan never plays in it, I guess because there's so many other things to play with? So it's funny to me how he gets so into playing with this little box of sand. Boys are funny, I guess. ; )
Donovan also has been showing great interest in playing with the cat's food lately, so I got a second plastic bin and want to find small pebbles to put in it for him to play with as well. I suppose I'll have to watch him more closely with that one but I'll also try to find pebbles small enough to not be a serious choking hazard (ideally, cat-food sized since he likes that so much).
